Shift Light

Tim,
You recently said you were going to put a nice bright shift light on your bike. Got any makes or models in mind? I was thinking about doing that but haven't really reserched it yet. I did see one in Summit's catalog, but it's 5 inches long. Not sure if it would fit with the Windvest shield I have.
Any one else have any ideas? Thanks!

Don,

Summitt & Jegs both advertise a couple that are LED display. They are a bit larger, but supposedly very bright in daylight. I have an LED in our short-box and it is really bright.

I'm still trying to see if I can find an LED in the mini version. Will let you know if I find one. I think if it is munted and aimed right, even an incadesent would be bright enoough to do the job.

Tim
Tim,
Here's two places to look. Proform Parts and Raptor Performance. I'm leaning toward the one from Raptor because of it's size. Only thing is I'm wondering how water proof they are. Have to consider those impromptu bouts of rain!! For what it's worth: :capwin:

Are you guys going to use the shift light as a red line indicator. We are not supposed to power shift these trannys so I am just curious.
Jack,
Yes, I am. Not for power shifting, just so I know when I've hit red line. I have a tach, but its small, and I don't want to have to be looking at a tach at those speeds! I figure.......see the light, don't rev any more.
Plus, it might look pretty cool. :D
Jack

When you are running NOS the engine gets there so fast in low that you have little time to look at anything other than where you are going. If you hit the light at 6,000 RPM it is time to shut down the NOS ands drive like a sane person. Yea sure.

Adrian
Adrian,

You're right on. Mine gets there fast enough on gas ! I've found that when I've done the really long (400'+) burnouts, by the time you're at 250' or so, the actual momentum is around 75 to 80 mph......and at 400' when I shut off I'm well over 100mph....hard to see that damned small tach....or even be looking at anything other than the road out front.

I figure the light will be set at about 5500 or 5800 (kinda slow in my advanced age) to give me the warning of redline.

Don, the Proform is one that I looked at...but I think I'll look at the Raptor. Where did you find it??

Tim
Don,

Duh...just saw the link and looked....ordering one of those bad boys today.

Thanks,

Tim
The Raptor appears to be a nice little light. The price is very reasonable also . Where are you going to mount it , on your handle bars I would suppose ? To bad they don't make a nice handle bar mount but it wouldn't take much to figure out something simple .
Jack,
I think with a bit of tweaking I can mount mine on my NOS controller panel. Shouldn't be too hard to modify or create a bracket.

Tim
I like the Raptor light too. Not too big, and not too small. I'll put it on my handlebars, between the risers...........somehow!
Don,
How about an Arlen Ness bracket for your brake lines. I used two to mount my GPS unit. You may be able to get a longer screw and run the screw through the mount bracket from the shift light than through the Arlen Ness threads on the clamp. Just a thought.
Glenn
Glenn, thanks for the idea. I'm going to wait til after Daytona now, but that might just work! Are you going down there? If so, maybe I'll see you there.
Don,
Can't makle it for the spring. I am planning for the Fall again and have scheduled the time off. Here (hopefully) is a pic of how I used the Arlen Ness clamps on my bike. (You just need to use the clamp screw instead) . I am still game for a get together this spring.

I looked for shift lights but didn't have as much luck finding anything that looked good. Poor eyesight, slow reflexes, and old age led me to make the whole thing idiot proof. I installed a MSD 6AL ignition control unit. It fits in the "trunk" with a lot of room left over and comes with 3,000 6,000 7,000 and 8,000 rpm rev limit chips (many others available). Just grab a handful and watch the road without worrying about over rev. The unit randomly drops spark then resores it on the next rotation to give a "soft interupt" (doesn't launch you over the bars) I don't know if the unit is compatable with NOS, I would ask the go-fast experts first.
Regards,
Kurt
Glenn,
I also will be looking forward to a Spring time meet. Probably will take a bit of organizing with the other guys, but should be do-able. See ya then!! :D
Hey Tim,
Did you get that shift light from Raptor yet? Install it yet?
I have a small LED shift light made by Accumen, but it's a bit tooooo small for me because it has little LED's around the outer edge of the face and it's a pain in the ass to set. That's why I was thinking about the Raptor. I am about to order it, but thought I'd see how you made out. Thanks.....Don B
Don,

I have the light. Nice unit and appears to be well made. I ordered a "P" bracket from Kuryakyn to mount it to the bars, left of my nitrous controller. The bracket is supposed ot be here today, so I'll wire and mount it this weekend.....I really liked the fact that I could color coordinate to the paint  Yellow LEDs

It is not waterproof......one is going to have to be careful or put a "condom" on it to protect from water. I'll see what I can come up with for that.

Bracket # is 4024.

Tim
Tim,
I'll be looking forward to hearing how you make out. Maybe you can post a pic when installed? Did you order it online, or over the phone? How long did it take to get? Thanks.....D
Don,

Ordered on-line on a Thursday, had it Monday. As soon as I get it on I'll post a snap shot.

I'm thinking of going to an office supply store and finding the correct size "finger rubber" to go over the end that has the controls for setting. That way it would be easy to pull back to change the setting if ya needed to.

Hopefully get that done, oil changed and retorque the heads and I will be ready to reassemble  After all, we may be above freezing by June and I want to be ready
