What a pain! The steering stem on my late model front end which was modified to fit my previous frame is much too short and the bearings too small. The stem appears to be pressed into the lower tree so I assume I'll need a new lower triple tree member. I'll bet thats's a $300-350 item. The motor mounts on top also do not line up and I assume the late model units are different.
Did anyone at the factory tell me about these things as well as other minor issues...NO. This upgrade is becoming a bear and expensive. Before anyone else considers the upgraded steering neck...please get in touch with me as it is not a simple swap.....Joe

Joe,
With welding the frame and adding gussets, even though I had to remove the NOS computer controller and bottles, I think I must have done quite a bit less swearing than you have and are about to continue. Good Luck with your project.

Joe,
Sorry to hear of all your troubles. I know you've spoken to the factory. Do they know about the latest "hassle" you're having? If so, what do they have to say??????....Don

Don....$400 for a new lower member of the triple tree with a longer stem and new , larger bearings!...This I was never told would be needed when I asked for the frame upgrade when speaking with Rad directly. About the top motor monts, they say I should bend them out to fit! I can't see how this will work since they are off about 3'8" on each side. They say they will make me new ones if this doesn't work. I'm more than a little pissed that I wasn't advised up front about all the changes that were needed. Had I known, believe me, I would have taken Glenn Boglisch's advice and just had the sucker welded up.
So now I'm up to about $1300 for the frame alone with shipping both ways and with the new water pump, alternator bracket, wiring harness, pipes, stainless kickstand, small battery, Holley pump and a few other small doodads we're talking $2500 without the painters re-do and mods to my radiator louvers which will run, as a guesstimate $500 and added is the labor for the complete disassemble and reassemble, I' looking at $3000+. This has not been a happy experience for me since my expectation was less than $2000.
Love and learn and pay. But I really should have been apprised of all that the neck upgrade entailed and was given the impression this would be a simple swap. The pain in the ass factor also annoys me because I've had to call the factory about every problem which they should have anticipated.....Joe
