Need help on tranny return spring

My shift lever works but the trans. shifter return spring has either broken or come loose. I constantly have to pull the shift lever back 1/4 inch before I can shift into a different gear. If I hit a bump it may cause it to jump out. Really a problem if you are going from reverse to forward.

As I recall this is inside the trans. Can I get to it without splitting the frame (i.e. can I get to it by dropping the trans. pan only? Parts needed other than spring and maybe tranny gasket?

Thanks much.

You can change the spring by just dropping the pan. You have to replace the shaft as the spring and shaftcome assembled.

Kaveman, thanks much and Hawk-exactly what I needed.
It really is simple to change out the spring assembly, it just seems sort of intimidating at first...let us know if you need any help... :)
Steve,
How did you make out with the return spring fix????
Boss Man

GREAT instruction set from WAG on the tranny shifter return spring. Will do this weekend or next, also need to hook up vac. gauge and fuel gauge. Hey, it was time to change the tranny fluid anyway.

Thanks for the tips, saves me a 4 hr. 1 way drive to nearest dealer in Va.
