I have a Lift Rack
http://www.liftrack.com/ that I bought a couple of years ago. There is a nice animation of how they work on the website. They were first made by a dentist who has hence sold the marketing rights (I believe). It's a jack type, but sits flush on the floor. The back section comes off and the bike can be supported by a wood block (which fits under the bell housing of my boss to let the rear wheel hang. (I haven't tried backing it in for front wheel service yet. Anyway, the first ones made wer 1000 lbs capacity, and my was rated (guaranteed) to 1200 but I was told that was conservative.
I think the design has some advantage over the Handy lift (which I was ready to buy at the time). It's very easy to use and since the rack is only 1/8 inch off the floor, it's easy to get the bike on and off (I leave mine parked on the lift all the time) and it doesn't waste garage space.
They are a bit pricy for what they are ($750 + $30 shipping).
The ones being sold now are rated for 1000 lbs, but you might want to call the 800 number on the website and see if that's conservative or if the stronger model is still available.
