I've been noticing a popping sound that seems to be coming from the rear of my 2001 350 BH. Also, I notice that there is a lot of black dust collecting on the wheel rim on the belt side of the rear wheel. I washed the bike this afternoon and took it out for a 100 mile ride. Heard popping and saw black dust on one side only. What may be the problem? Has anybody experienced this problem?

Alan - I was thinking about the popping sound, you do have the correct belt tension? It could be the belt teeth popping past the pulley teeth. Is it while you accellerate? Also check the pulley on the tranny make sure the bolts are the correct torque and the pulley is tight. Belt guard clearance would be another thing to check.

Thanks for the tips. I thought the black dust may be unrelated to the popping.

The popping doesn't happen while accelerating, but just riding along. It doesn't seem to do it at real slow speeds, but at 30+ mph. It is quite irregular, as it's almost like a strap flapping. I'll check out the belt guard.
