Due for a new filter and saw the numerous posts on the other web site regarding CFM upgrades. Plan on purchasing the K&N E2500 and the cut down 66-0901 extreme flow cap. Anyone with any good or bad experiences please let me know. Have an 03 350/385 and just want to make sure I have clearance. Other suggestions welcome.

Air filter

Conrad

I just did that project prior to Christmas. I didn't have any trouble removeing the element from the metal ring, and everything looks to fit fine. If you want to see what it looks like, I live in Bay Village and you're welcome to stop and take a look.

I have had the same filter setup for two years but ruined two X-Treme lids trying to pry the element from the metal housing. Finally settled for cutting the lip off the lid and don't understand how some of you are able to slip the filter out...Joe

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. Dean, I'll call you tomorrow. I just got home from the Eddie Money show at the new House of Bluesand it might be a little late to call. Did I meet you at the bike night in the flats last summer?

Conrad after seeing your post and a bunch others regarding the air flow, I ordered the k&n and extreme top from summit. I'm not sure what all the cutting is about but once I get the top I'll know. What is the best method for removing the top. I know its been posted some time ago but do you think I can find it? Anyone thats been there done that, I'd appreciate a heads up on the best way. Steve,
On the "bosshosscountry.com" site there are a number of posts including pictures of the finished product and directions. I just ordered mine on Friday. Summit had the xstream cap in stock but had to drop ship the E-2500 from K&N. I'll let you know how it works for me. Some just cut 1" from the edge (2" total dia.) to match the 7" base with small side cutters and others have taken it to a machine shop for the "cut". Not sure what I"ll do yet until I see it.

Steve,

On my top, I took a tin snip and made cuts every 1" or so all of the way around the top (it's the lip that protrudes out from the element). Once those cuts are made you can bend the "tabs" 2 or 3 times and they snap off. Some emery cloth or a sanding disc and the top is smooth. Alittle black spray paint and it looks like it was made that way.

On mine, I had to run the top upside down to clear the tank and not have to get a longer center bolt. But once I had the tank remounted I had plenty of clearance.

Air filter project

Open K&N 66-0901 Xstream Air filter box = 1 minute
Use tin snips every 1 inch (per Grumpy) = 3 minutes
Bend back and forth each tab to remove = 2 minutes
Use hacksaw to trim rough edges = 3 minutes
File edge smooth = 2 minutes
Paint edge with black spray = 2 minutes
Watch paint dry and drink 2 beers = 15 minutes
Extra air flow to the carb = priceless

Thanks guys....piece of cake

Room for stuff

Don,

Looking at your neat installation of the air cleaner set up and fuel pump - looks great! The pump location might make the installation of the nitrous / purge solenoids interesting. The carb / air cleaner will also be 3/4" higher. Post a picture of that when you finish.

Phil,
That's not my bike. It's Olaf's in Germany. I just grabbed the picture from another post. My fuel pump is mounted next to the battery, over the front drive pulley. But I do have the X-Treme filter top. Hmmmmm....looks like that may be a problem. But then maybe not, cause I do have a spacer under the carb now that is about 1/4" thick.
Guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Thanks for making me think about it though.......Don

Tim,

You said you flipped the top of your K&N filter over to provide clearance which obviously works. My question is, is the K&N filter designed to filter air from either direction, because now you are sucking air from the underside of it now that it is upside down?

Got my extreme top yesterday, cut the tabs as per Tim's post. Worked great. The air filter, however is on backorder. Now I don't know why this **** always happens to me! Ya think its some kinda sign or what.... I was planning on putting this all together....noooooooo way...backorder until Feb 7th or something. Just the other day I ordered some decals from J&P cycles for my trailer. Out of 5.....3 were backordered. oh well!!

K & N for Demon

HELP!

I want to order the K & N with extreme lid, and wonder it it will fit a Holley Demon Jr (625CFM) with vac secondaries?

Got the carb from Elliot, from his georgous Kannon Chopper, and want to install it sometime or other, however, just post surgery cain't even take the Boss tank off to compare carb mount flange sizes.

If anyone knows "off the top", shoot a reply please.

Thanks.
