ZZ4 Fuel System acting starved

Trike is a 2007 ZZ4 with throttle body/ fuel injection. Acting starved for fuel, won't accelerate hard, stumbles every once in a while. Fuel filter from gas tank is clear. Fuel pump squeals like a pig when key turned on. Bad sign or normal? See picture; is the black can next to the distributor a pressure regulator? It leads to the throttle body and is not clogged but is hard to blow through. On the other picture showing a corner of the battery, is that another pressure regulator on the lower left? The fuel pump on far right of the picture, correct? I've heard talk of a "red pump" replacement. Details on the red pump, NAPA number? Any advice appreciated! Sooner or later this nasty weather has to break and riding season will be here!

Mine is a 2010 ZZ4 , Fuel filter is on your picture #1, fuel pump is by battery, with fuel coming from the fuel tank selector powered valve ( main tank or reserve tank). Check your fuel shut off valve under left side of tank, I have the same fuel pump noise if I leave the valve closed or or somewhat closed, might even have a small screen inside the shut/off valve, like my HD'S had.

Might be able to get the trike out around July with this crap weather, another 5 inches of snow, and tons of salt on the roads again in Wisconsin.

Ha! Sounds like your weather is worse than central PA. It was spitting snow here a minute ago, but nothing is on the ground.
Are you sure that black can in Pic #1 is a fuel filter? It's on the line that goes from the fuel pump directly into the throttle body. The silver fuel filter (NOT PICTURED) between the gas tank and fuel pump is clear, not stopped up. The black can is blocked, unless it's supposed to be a regulator.

Took the seat off for a look see, my trike has three fuel filters, one from the reserve tank, one from the main tank, and one from the high pressure fuel pump outlet end going to the throttle body. All three filters are silver the standard auto parts metal can type filter. The pump is wrapped in a black foam type covering for heat protection?, of course with a wire harness connection to it. My owners manual says replacement part number for the ZZ4 fuel pump is #2420201. My 2010 has the factory installed system, maybe yours started out as a carb. A friend of mine has a 2006 trike and his is carb. engine.

Have you tried for a good gravity flow of fuel from the tank yet?

The black can is a fuel filter, WIX 33482 or Purolator F33165. I sourced a Purolator locally. Haven't put it in yet. Mine is definitely clogged. There's another can in one of my photos, heavier looking with fuel line attached by bolts, maybe a pressure regulator. I didn't take it off. I probably should while I have the gas tank drained, but I'm tempted to just put this filter on and see how she runs. Filter on the line from gas tank to pump is clear.

I agree, the black can is a fuel filter. There are pre-pump and post-pump filters with most all EFI systems. The pre-pump is to save your pump from crap in your tank. The post-pump is to save your motor from a grenade'd pump.

The Holley Red you referred to is NOT for EFI, it is a low pressure pump for carbs, ~6psi or so, not the ~60psi you may need for EFI.

If your post-pump filter is clogged, and your pre-filter is clean.... and your pump is making a horrible noise... you may want to do a health check on your pump. You should be able to cycle the key with the "old" filter on/off and have your gas line going into a gas can. You should have flow. If you remove the filter, you should have flow. If you don't have flow with the filter, and you don't have flow without it... you have problems upstream and it isn't the filter. May be worth buying a few feet of gas line from the parts store and just testing components 1 at a time.

Fuel pumps shouldn't squeal.

You can see my pre-filter and my fuel pump. My post-pump filter was up by the gas tank near the throttle body. This is a custom install, and if you want to see more, feel free to dig through my gallery.

Hey thanks! That's very helpful. After I replaced the post pump filter, I took it on a forty mile ride yesterday. It runs like stink again, 110 in the blink of an eye.
Do you know what the other black can is, in the lower left of my original photo, the one that shows a corner of the battery? This one has heavy duty fittings on each end and is post pump.

Hard for me to tell in the pic, and I don’t know what BH does to regulate fuel pressure. FPR come in all shapes and sizes. My pump is a PWM (pulse width modulation) which is basically variable speed. So the brain box in my throttle body just sends as many volts to the pump as needed to maintain fuel pressure. No FPR in my system.
Most FPR have a return line, so that the fuel pump can run at a constant load, and the FPR returns the extra fuel to the tank. Sometimes, like in a new Corvette, the FPR is integrated with the fuel filter. In some cars it is integrated with the fuel pump basket.

I dont know enough about it, sorry.

2011 sierra truck trike zz4 engine fuel pump

My trike has the zz4 350 engine with the fuel injection throttle body on top of motor, question is do you need a high pressure fuel pump and what pressure? or will a low pressure pump feed it. Does anybody know what the pump in it now is? Longer black pump with hose on one end and other end has metal 90 degree fitting running up to the fuel filter. The dealer said it was a Walbro 45lbs or more and that was it nothing else said.
Thank You
Rick

Almost 2 years ago I replaced several fuel filters and had no more problem with fuel pressure. I've been told the fuel pump is rather specific to those early throttle bodies, and personally I would only replace it with a Boss Hoss pump. I've spent quite a bit of time talking with Jeremy at Mountain Boss Hoss (PA) and with factory people. I look them up every year in Daytona.

Rick,

Whenever I travel on my bike, I always carry extra "stuff" with me.
Ignition Control Module, fuel pumps, in-line fuel filter, sometimes
an alternator, and all the tools under the seat to be able to do any
of this work where ever I might get stuck.
I like to always be WAY over-prepared ! :smileride:
Always carry water !
